1. Tim Berners-Lee

Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee (aka TimBL) is an English computer scientist who is best known for his invention, the World Wide Web. He is the founder of the World Wide Web Foundation and a holder of the founder chair at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).

Tim Berners-Lee was elected a foreign associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences in 2009. He has also been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his pioneering work.

2. Hal Abelson

Harold “Hal” Abelson is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also the founding director of Free Software Foundation and Creative Commons.

He has worked with Electrical and Computer Engineer, Gerald Jay Sussman, and developed an introductory computer science subject for MIT, “The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs.” The subject was based on the ideology that a computer language is not just a way to perform operations but rather a formal medium for expressing ideas about methodology.

Hal Abelson has also directed the implementation of Logo for the Apple II – an 8-bit home computer.

3. Gene Amdahl

Gene Myron Amdahl was an American computer architect and a high-tech entrepreneur.  He is recognised for his contribution on mainframe computers at IBM. He has also formulated the Amdahl’s law, which is based on a fundamental limitation of parallel computing.

Gene Amdahl even served in the Navy during the World War II. He earned his engineering degree at South Dakota State University in 1948 and studied theoretical physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Gene Amdahl also created the Wisconsin Integrally Synchronized Computer – the first digital computer in the state.

4. Frances E. Allen

Frances E. Allen is an American computer scientist. She is also considered a pioneer in the field of optimizing compilers. She has also worked on programming languages and security codes for the NSA (National Security Agency).

She is also the first woman to receive the Turing Award and to be the first female IBM Fellow – an appointed position at IBM. Some of her greatest achievements include parallel computing, code optimization, and compilers.

5. Douglas Engelbart

Douglas Carl Engelbart was an American inventor who is considered as early computer and Internet pioneer.  He is critically acclaimed for his work on founding the field of human-computer interaction which involved the creation of the computer mouse, precursors to graphical user interfaces, networked computers, and the development of hypertext.
