4 Famous Electronic Engineering Marvels

The advancement of science and technology today is a reality because of the innovations in the electronic engineering world. The world has had various electronic engineering marvels which have proved to be the indispensable stepping stones for whatever we are today.

Here are some of the famous electronic marvels that changed the world.

  1. Semiconductor devices

All the electronic gadgets that we use today: smartphones, tablets, laptops, digital cameras, etc. have come into reality because of the innovation in semiconductors. It’s because of the semiconductor devices that electronic devices are much compact and efficient in operation.

Semiconductor devices exploit the ‘standard’ electronic properties of semiconductor materials as their electrical behaviour can be manipulated by adding impurities through a process known as ‘doping.’ Examples of semiconductor devices include diodes and transistors.

  1. IC (Integrated Circuits)

The IC, or better known as semiconductor chip, is solely responsible for breaking the barrier of technological progress in human history. The ingenious chip is what gave birth to the computer revolution and digital age.

There are more number of ICs in the world than humans; these nanochips are present everywhere – computers, smartphones, TVs, cars, planes, trains, etc. ICs lay a great foundation for the development of electronic devices. It’s because of ICs that companies such as Intel, Apple, Blackberry, and Microsoft exist. Without ICs, there would be no internet, Hubble Space Telescope, or even the International Space Station.

  1. Transistors

Considered as the most important invention of the 20th century, transistor is the fundamental building block of processors and therefore is a foundation of modern computers. Before transistors were invented, vacuum tubes were used to control/manipulate electric current for computing.

The world’s first general purpose computer that integrated 18,000 vacuum tubes weighed 30 tonnes and took the size of an entire room. Today, the function of those vacuum tubes can be contained in the size of a grain of sand through transistors. A modern phone contains about 2 billion transistors.

  1. LEDs

LED, or Light Emitting Diode, has brought a massive change in the lighting technology. Without LEDs, there would be no backlit smartphones, computer LCD screens, Blu-ray players, and smart TVs.

LEDs give off very bright light while consuming less electricity; and as LEDs have a compact build, they are highly energy efficient. LEDs also have a longer lifespan than that of incandescent light bulbs. LEDs are used in almost every electronic device – computers, phones, printers, cameras, etc.
